Answer by Oh BrotherMost journals are now online, and are accessed almost exclusively via this method (The American Chemical Society are planning to stop producing hard copies of there journals anymore)
Web based search engines, especially SciFinder and Beilstein Crossfinder, are used to a huge degree to find references in chemistry.
These two things link up – people find references on a search engine and then can open the article straight away on there computer.
