Image by Metro Transportation Library and Archive Question by Cory: Best alternative fuel source? Since gasoline prices are going to crush the American economy, what would the best alternative fuel source? Hydrogen’s pretty cheap, you’d just get like 5 miles to the gallon. Ethanol would be a NO. That’d just lead to massive corn famines

Burns much cleaner than gasoline. Exhaust from a hydrogen engine is h2o.
I think maybe because it’s renewable or gives off less pollution.
Because its exhaust is water and it is overly abundant in the atmosphere.

Hydrogen… what? – it sure as hell aint hydrogen gas cuz u’d blow up ur fn car

Hydrogen is plentiful and easily created:
There are two possible sources for the hydrogen:
* Electrolysis of water – Using electricity, it is easy to split water molecules to create pure hydrogen and oxygen. One big advantage of this process is that you can do it anywhere. For example, you could have a box in your garage producing hydrogen from tap water, and you could fuel your car with that hydrogen.
* Reforming fossil fuels – Oil and natural gas contain hydrocarbons — molecules consisting of hydrogen and carbon. Using a device called a fuel processor or a reformer, you can split the hydrogen off the carbon in a hydrocarbon relatively easily and then use the hydrogen. You discard the leftover carbon to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.

The only waste from using it in Cars would be water which is completely harmless
It’s one of if not the most common element on our planet meaning its not going to run out
However it takes a lot of energy to extract it using electroysis
And ts difficult to store

u mean hydrogen cells, they work that’s why

Because burning hydrogen does not release carbon dioxide.
That said, promoting hydrogen needs to take into account how one gets that hydrogen in the first place. Most hydrogen right now is prepared from natural gas, and that preparation releases just as much carbon dioxide as burning the natural gas (instead of the hydrogen) in the first place.
If the hydrogen is produced by electrolysis of water, then one has to account how the electricity was produced. If it was from a coal or oil fired power planet, then we are back to square one, as far as carbon dioxide is concerned.
Hydrogen is NOT an alternate fuel. Right now, is is just a way of packaging energy, just like a rechargeable battery does.

Well at first I thought yeah right why do that? I’ve seen pics of the Hindenburg. But if you think about it Hydrogen is part of water so really if you get a car that runs on water wouldn’t it be perfect?
Pumping straight hydrogen into a tank doesn’t sound practicable but it is a cleaner form of energy than gas run vehicles and it’s not hydrogen gas.
And once again, you are just one step away from a car that runs on water.

Hydrogen, when mixed with oxygen, give off a HUGE amount of usable energy.
but the ONLY byproduct is water vapor. NO “greenhouse gases” are given off.
But hydrogen requires some pretty strict safety regulation. Hydrogen (and oxygen) are highly flammable, even explosive. The BEST form of hydrogen as fuel is the “Fuel Cell”. NASA has been using fuel cells on space craft almost since the first Mercury space shots.

Population control. Fittings and piping in hydrogen service leak because it is a very small molecule. Once it leaks and finds an ignition source, BOOM! It makes a powerful explosion. Accidents can be fatal; population problem could be solved.
