Why do we need a ISP to get to the internet?

Question by arakratty: Why do we need a ISP to get to the internet?
If the internet is just a network of networks, why do we need a ISP? Couldn’t we go straight to our destination website?

This image makes sense, but why not go straight to the server where the website you want is hosted? The only answer I have found which seems likely is this: “ISPs are usually places that hold big computers called servers. These servers often hold critical information about where all the computers around the world are located. ”
So is it like if you want to go somewhere you cant just go there, you have to consult a map, and the ISP is the map?
If not please tell me why, and dont dumb it down I can use google =P

To go direct to the server where the website you want is hosted you would have to carry your computer to the place where that server is and connect a network cable between them.
An ISP routes your traffic onto the Internet. It provides “local roads” and pays for access to the “highways” which it sends your traffic along.

ISP are responsible to creating and maintaining the network infrastructure.
ISP are the one who place the cables to expand the network infrastructure, they will also fix it if it gets damage, they will also upgrade them to fit future demands.
ISP do also have DNS servers, these DNS servers basically translate the domain name you enter and convert it to an ip address. Then your data will ask where the next step in the network to find the server that uses that ip address.

The ISP provides that connection between you and the server you want to access. While some ISPs do “hold big computes called servers” that isn’t what you care about as far as accessing the network.
Consider your home phone. You need a wire (and telephone service) between your phone in your house and the “phone network” that is partly owned by your telephone company and also includes all the other phone companies in the world. That physical wire from your house to the phone company central office and the service that you pay for to allow you to use that wire are similar in function to what your ISP offers that allows you to get to the internet.
