Question by rtang@sbcglobal.net: What virtualization product is more popular, Citrix or VMware?
I am new to server technology, so far I learn all the basics of Windows Server 2003. Now virtualization seems key to an enterprise environment. Too keep myself in the game, I want to include myself in the loop of virtualization technology. I heard about Citrix Xenserver and VM ESX server. Which product should I focus on and chose for my studies? Which one seems to be commonly used in an enterprise?

VMware, is more popular to users. I used to use it because i found it to be more efficient to me. This is mostly used in business, And on Servers too. Citrix is more like VNC, my mother uses Citrix to work from home, it’s basically a expanded Version of VNC viewer. So your better off with VMware Workstation or Server. Because they are Real-time Virtual Machines, not like Citrix which is like Viewing another desktop over the internet. VMware is much more efficient if you just want to ”purely” use Virtual Machines. Another inexpensive and free choice is Windows Virtual PC. It’s free but it Requires you to have AMD-v or Intel-VTx CPU. You can use Windows XP Mode.

Xen seems typically to be used to divvy out linux servers.
ESX works better in a mixed environment.
