Q&A: Do You Think Election Voting Will Ever Make Its Way To Voting On The Internet?
Question by Jim: Do You Think Election Voting Will Ever Make Its Way To Voting On The Internet?
At this point the technology is not 100% secure but it may be within the next 10-20 years.
Do you think voting will ever make its way online or do you think, no matter how advanced tech. gets, it will never happen?
Also do you think online voting is a good thing, period?

My first reaction is ‘no, no one would trust it.’
My second reaction is “Cool! Ron Paul would be President!”

Technology will never be 100% secure. Never. Internet voting will never happen, too easy to commit fraud or knock the system offline.

The current state of internet ‘security’ is better than the state / fed system that’s so patently easy to rig, http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/india-news/electronic-voting-machines-software-extremely-vulnerable-to-rigging_100104873.html so acorn would only be hampered a little by internet voting. But they would whine about that pretty loudly, since the voter would have to be smart enough to operate a computer. That, however, could be a really good thing, considering the voter intelligence level of the last election.

Any system we can devise, can be compromised by crooked politicians and their minions.

Yes. But probably not in this century. After 250 years, most polling places still use paper ballots, rather than computers.

I’m really not sure. Technology of today is vastly different than it was 20 years ago, when no one was thinking about the Internet or iPhones and whatnot. That is to say, in another 20 years… there will be as many, or more, advances in technology as there have been in the previous 20.
Voting security would be the top priority, and with current means, I don’t think there’s any effective way to run Internet voting. Technology might change that, but I personally am not able to envision it at the moment. But I’m no Steve Jobs. =)
The second major issue with Internet voting though, is accessibility. It seems strange to those of us who log a lot of net-hours, but there is still a pretty sizable population that doesn’t really have Internet access. From poor inner cities to rural areas, there are still some places where the Internet isn’t entirely easy to reach, and in the case of voting that would effectively disenfranchise people unfairly. Until we can guarantee that literally everyone eligible to vote also has an Internet connection, then we would still need some form of polling center where they could go to vote.

I hope not! Voter fraud is so rampant now I can’t imagine what would happen if you could go online. Bad idea all the way around. The only good thing would be the convenience but really, if you can’t make it out once every 4 years well what can I say. As for those unable to they have that covered.

I don’t think it really matters. The candidates are chosen long before the faux election process. Do you really think your vote actually means anything to the political machine?
Case in point: Obama was awarded the nobel peace prize. The determination of the winner was made on the basis of his winning the election before he’d actually won it. Go figure.
