Best new programming technologies to learn?
Question by Jeff: Best new programming technologies to learn?
I’m an old-school COBOL programmer, who needs to update my skill-set. What kinds of things should I try to learn that would not take a lot of time or money? How should I go about learning these things? How can I get resume-worthy experience once I’ve learned them? Thank you all in advance for your help.
Actually, I guess what I meant was: what is relatively easy to learn, and in demand from employers?

I have recently taken several courses in college for programming. They are teaching Visual Basic and the Java language. The Java language is at the forefront of the programming languages and it is what I recommend to you to look into. Find some books and help sites on the web for Java. After doing so, download the Sun Java Enterprise 8 from the sun java site (can’t remember, just search for it, and it should come up). Well, this is all I can give you. Good luck!

It depends on what kind of applications you want to develope… As far as general purpose…I suggest you start with Python, its concise, compact and easy to learn, you should also read about Object oriented programming concepts. That should get you started.
Here is the link from TIOBE which shows the popularity of programming languages.
