I think you’ve becomes a slave of something when you either can’t or don’t think you can do without something. I think countries in the western world are becoming slaves of oil-producing countries because of their dependence on oil. This dependence is not totally necessary in that it is the result of western addiction to using vehicles more than they need to ans using vehicles that are bigger than they need to have. Commercials ‘create’ needs so that companies can sell their products, and people start to think that they can’t do without them. Of course, we are now so dependent, in a real sense, on computer technology, that we would suffer greatly if we had to do without it. I think that anything you become dependent on you also become a slave to.

well we are free…free to need a new mobile every year although none work as well as an old analogue, need the same running shoe with a different stripe etc. Are blackmailed to throw whole television systems and computers and software in the bin. As we continue to glut ourselves and 3rd world countries follow with ever increasing air conditioning and dish washers I have to draw a parralell with locusts stripping a feild. Yeah sure we are slaves of our own destruction.

We are becoming slaves to this modern and ever-enchancing technology, because we are more and more dependent on it as time progresses. An example is GPS. There was a time when there was no need for a GPS, because people never left the place where they were born by 50 miles, but now our culture commonly traveling hundred of miles in less than a day. Another example is the atomic bomb. There was a time when people’s greatest fear was a tribe of people attacking them and stealing things. Now, our greatest problem is mass destruction bombs that could blow up entire coutries, and even worse the world. The atomic bomb is stupid and should be destroyed, because it is too much power for one person or a group of people to have. Our ever-enchancing technology has benefited us greatly, yet at the same may destroy our lives.

Yes, but only if we let ourselves become that way.
People who use Blackberrys are great examples. They are enslaved to be constantly checking their email, even when driving or doing personal activities. That’s why I refused one when it was offered to me.
Same with cell phones. I definitely have a love-hate relationship with my cell phone, mostly because people do not call me unless they want something or are delivering bad news. No one calls me to tell me something good or to invite me to something fun on it.
I think I have the appropriate relationship with technology. It is a tool that I use, but turn off when I’m at home or doing something else that requires my attention.

I don’t think so. Is a carpenter, any more a slave to an air powered nail driver than he was to a hammer. Are we anymore slaves to an automobile than our ancestors were to horses. At least a car only burns gas when you drive it, last time I checked horses eat every day whether you ride them or not.
