Looking for a basic overview of the parts and how to install them for the “do it yourself” homeowner.

There will likely be seminars hosted by solar installers in your area, who are looking for business. That won’t give you all the info you need to install your own, but would be a good overview. In fact, just getting a free quote on a system is a good source of information. Akeena Solar operates in New Jersey, among many others.
DIY is not for most people, any more than most people would re-roof their house on their own, or add a branch circuit to their service panel. The link below will give an idea of what’s involved, but that install was from 3 years ago – technology has advanced somewhat, prices have gone down, and electrical codes have changed. For example, the AC disconnect switch is no longer required.
In my area of California, local community colleges and technical institutes offer courses in solar installation, but those are targeted at students intending to make a career of it someday. Anyone from the community would be allowed to register for the courses, though, paying a nominal fee.

This is nice cheap introductory tour of solar:

Then you should get in touch with a solar supplier, who can make you a kit with instructions:

You should have a master electrician help you, but if you are handy you can do it.
