The sooner, the better. The sooner we can wean ourselves off oil, especially foreign oil, the better for us, the environment, and everyone except OPEC and the big oil companies.

Not for a long time. It has been estimated it will take from 25-50 years for every car to be run by hydrogen. Right now the wisest way to decrease oil dependency is to create revolutionary alternative sources of energy for our homes. Wind and solar technology is what you will be seeing in the future.
The problem with hydrogen is it must be processed and chemically unbound from water. The unbinding process also requires fuel. Currently we do not have the hydrogen technology to perform this task profitably. Also, experts have figured that the added cost of a hydrogen run car is more than the money you save on gas.
What they are doing with cars is making them smaller, lighter, and creating a more powerful battery. Also don’t forget about biodeisel, which if anything you will see sooner than hydrogen. Biodeisel is a quick fix, but yes, in probably between 40-80 years all cars will be run on hydrogen.

The moment, the hydrogen is produced realy clean and benign, the breakthriugh will come fast and will be here! It has to come decentralized, without using (or better: Be used by…) …monopolistic structures. As our energhy woprld is today, it has no future at all. There is only one way out:
Power to the people!
