Question by 011: What other career alternatives are there for someone already in IT?
I have been working in IT / computers for over 10 years, and up until a few years ago, really enjoyed working in this field. However, it seems things have changed so much from 10 yrs ago (I’m not talking about changes in computer technology, but rather changes in overall direction — for example, the recent trend of focusing away from IT technology and operations, in favor of project management.) In general IMHO, IT has become much more “business-focused” than it has been in the past, although I myself enjoyed the technology side much more. One of the major reasons I got into IT was because of the “hands-on” component allowing you to learn by doing, which something I just don’t see in the current project management trend. Just wanted to ask if anyone who might have actually switched careers from working in IT, if they have any advice on what other careers they pursued as an alternative to working in the present IT environment? Thanks!
Thanks to those who already answered…just curious if anyone else has any input that they can share before the question closes?

The only people that I’ve know who left IT are now doing sales work for IT companies.

If you want to do hands on stuff try getting a technician’s position at a circuit city or best buy.
