Accounting is a task that deals with the process of recording and classifying the financial activities of a business or other similar endeavors. Aside from recording financial events, accounting also encompasses summarizing financial data as well as analyzing and interpreting the results.

A vast majority of institutions use accounting to tally finances. Schools have an accounting department to manage tuition fees, school expenses, and other financial records. Hospitals use accounting to compute hospital bills and donations. Businesses use it to compute income and revenue, as well as taxes and employee wages. The same fundamental principles in accounting apply even for non-profit organizations.

Nonprofit organizations are groups of individuals, who form an incorporated organization wherein the shareholders and trustees do not benefit financially. The organization exists purely for educational or charitable purposes. Any money earned usually comes in the form of donations from benefactors, and these donations are used to finance the organization’s expenses, operations and programs. These donations are basically used to keep the organization running, without the organization’s members receiving any financial profit of any sort, hence the term “nonprofit”.

Many nonprofit organizations these days are involved in providing continuous health care and medical services, such as clinics and hospitals, while some are in the advancement of education like schools, colleges and universities. Other nonprofit organizations include political parties, libraries, labor unions and other civic organizations. These organizations have an important role in society, which is why accounting for nonprofit organizations is equally important.

Despite the lack of income, non-profit organizations still have an inherent need for accounting. Donations need to be accounted for, and expenses need to be recorded. Accounting for nonprofit organizations is important because it allows them to manage donations, record expenses, and present accurate financial reports to their benefactors. Integrity is important if nonprofit organizations want to keep the donations coming in.

Modern technology has improved the way nonprofit organizations perform accounting tasks. Recognizing the need for accuracy and integrity in accounting nonprofit organizations has, the use of accounting software has become inevitable. Several accounting software programs are easily available from the Internet, but before installing the accounting software system nonprofit organizations need to find the software program that will best suit their needs.
