If the temp inside the house doesn’t drop below 66 anyway, how much energy does the natural gas furnace use just from being turned on, even if the thermostat doesn’t kick on to make it heat?

If you have an electronic ignition you would save nothing…If you have a standing pilot light you would save some over a period of time, but..you would have to re-light the pilot everyday.
If the temp inside the house drops to low, it takes more energy warming the cold mass backup, than leaving the temp set low. Every house is a bit different

The best thing to do is to replace your thermostat with a programmable one. You can save from 10-30% on your utility bill by doing this and using the energystar program. It is an easy diy project and very inexpensive. For more info, check out the thermostat page at http://www.hvac-for-beginners.com
