Question by Patrick E: How is mankind going to overcome the lack of oil in the future? Is solar power the best answer to replace oil?
Is anyone optimistic about fusion power?
I’ve frequently read that practical fusion power won’t be available until 2040-2045 and the first fusion reacter will be made in 2035.

Fusion power is the ultimate solution but will be many years before we can solve the technical problems for large scale production.
Oil can be made from plant matter- unfortunately this takes land away from food production.
Solar and wind power seem to be the main solution for energy at present if they can be made more efficient.

Fusion power would be wonderful, but right now the US is looking at 30 conventional nuclear power plants that generate tons of depleted uranium. From a pure economic perspective and a risk perspective, conventional nuclear power is not a viable alternative. It will make some people filthy rich and most of us in danger of radioactive poisoning. The only way this could happen if the US government decides to take the risk and allow the investors to get a pay back risk free (and probably subsidized in other ways).
Right now, hydroelectric in the Northwest competes favorably on a cost basis with everything. As the cost of oil continues to soar, wind power, tidal power, geothermal, solar water heating, and other renewable alternatives can easily be justified.
We can save enormous power by just building things that are more efficient. The waste of the average SUV is gargantuan. The average household wastes tremendous amounts of energy.
The answer will be conservation, efficiency, and new renewable sources of energy.

I think that for a time solar energy will be number one. Because oil reserves will inly last another 20-30 years. So we’ll eventually start to rely on solar.
Personally I think humans will develop fusion power within the next 10-20 years. When that happens energy will be almost free. I don’t remember where I read this but a fusion test was sustained long enough to give back all the energy required to get it started.

there are so many more resources out there besides oil. we have the ability to make ethanol fuel from corn and sugar cane. even though oil is used to make plastic different types of corn can be used to make plastic. I dont think the world would be over if there were no oil I think we would have to find other solutions to this crisis. like making alot of the things we use from plant materials.

Solar energy, but a bit more aggressive than just grabbing the tiny amount that comes to earth…
Something more like a dyson sphere – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyson_sphere
FAR into the future though…
Fission is probably the best thing we have at the moment.
