There are 5 main renewable Energy Sources. Renewable energy sources can be replenished in a short period of time.
1Geothermal-The word geothermal comes from the Greek words geo (earth) and therme (heat).These power sources can be used. I remember there is a place that uses volcano for cooking in Lanzarote. That was fun to see. But it has been considered a powerful source of energy, tapping into the steam or/and hot water.
2Water-Wave power.Tapping the power of waves crashing against some cog which would turn a turbine.
3Wind power.There are places in UK that have these,but unfortunately they are huge and make the landscape look bad.
4The Sun-Solar power. Not very effective,I have not seen this implemented large scale.Although there are a few pensioners houses in Kirkcaldy (where I live) with these on the roof.
5 Biomass- don’t know much about this one, although it thought of running ur car on cow poo.

The future technologies for power generation are
1. MHD generator. (Magneto Hydrodynamic) – In this a gas is heated to very high temperature – millions of degrees so that the atom loses electrons. These electrons are then made to accelerate by electric and magnetic fields. Finally the electrons are collected on collectors for generation of electricity. Technological advancement required.
2. Bio fuel cells – Special bacteria when grown on materials like rice husk etc or any other suitable bio waste produce electricity on plates. Presently the current rating is very small and the cells are bulky. Technological advancement is necessary.
3. I read in some paper that energy can also be liberated by distortion of space. Scientific advancement is necessary before technologies can be developed.
4. Solar energy – Presently we are able to tap only a small percentage of solar energy received from sun. With improvement in concentration techniques, the solar energy has tremendous potential. Imagine about 1 horse power per square metre ! It is huge.
5. Tidal energy – Present problem is huge civil works costs. However, since t ides are predictable, it can be used in power system.
6. Wind energy has a draw back that the speed of wind is not fixed and hence it can not be used as sole source of power as the generation is not easily regulated.
7. Hydro fuel cells – Hydrogen and oxygen are fed two sides of a memberane which generates water without combustion. Presently we have been able to drive truck from this. Technology is expensive presently.

currently nuclear power generation is using fission method which has the risk of radiation fallout. the future research should be on fusion method which will have no radiation generated.
nuclear power generation use very little fuel to generate mega watts of power. it will be pollution free if all cars, ships, air planes use nuclear power.
