The computers that form the Internet range from huge mainframes in research establishments to humble PCs in people’s homes and offices. Despite the recent publicity, the web is not a new thing. For many businesses the web is becoming integral to their operations. Imagine the ability to send and receive data: messages, notes, letters, documents, pictures, video, sound- just about any form of communication, as effortlessly as making a phone call. It is easy to understand why the web is rapidly becoming the corporate communications medium. The nature of the “information age” and communication are changing rapidly. Technologies that were previously considered advanced are becoming commonplace and new technologies are still being developed. The nature of this trend is evident in the multitude of definitions of long distance learning. Distance education is becoming a common practice as evidenced by the number of universities that offer distance education programs, the number of businesses offering distance learning and training programs, and the number of distance learning projects K-12 that are being created or are currently in use. Many educational institutions are relying on communication technologies, such as distance learning, to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of education. Rapid advances in computer and telecommunications capabilities have made possible the development of learning modules that include elements such as video transmission, e-mail, the Internet, and the World Wide Web. The use of less exotic (cable and broadcast television, audio-conferencing, fax, a compressed video network, telephone, and voice mail), and therefore, less expensive technologies in our attempt to equalize access to educational resources.

A great and unique thing about the web is that a single teacher can teach to the whole world that has access to the internet. It is clear that best teachers and best institutions are rare and it is not possible for the entire student to get education from good teachers and best institutions.
