Government security is of the utmost security in this modern age of information technology, particularly when it comes to granting access to secure areas and restricted data.  There are many tools that help the federal government secure its systems.  The security token is one small but powerful tool that ensures only authenticated users are allowed to use various computer services with restricted access.  Smart card technology is another important tool that is being used by the government as well as organizations in health care and many other sectors.  These modern information protectors are ensuring security for the government and many other large enterprises.

Many government agencies require the use of a security token for their authenticated users.  These tokens, which are also known as hardware tokens, hard tokens, authentication tokens, USB tokens, cryptographic tokens and key fobs, are usually physical devices that are given to authorized computer services users to make it easier to authenticate their identity.  Although they are common for government security, they are also used in commercial sectors to authenticate identity electronically, such as for customers trying to access their bank accounts.  Many experts agree that this technology offers better protection than requiring a password or answer to a security question.

Smart card technology is also crucial to the security of numerous government agencies and other large organizational systems.  These pocket-sized cards have integrated circuits implanted within, which are capable of processing large amounts of data.  Smart card technology can be used to receive and process input using ICC applications, and then to deliver the information as an output.  The technology includes memory cards with non-volatile memory storage components and basic security logic, and microprocessor cards with volatile memory and microprocessor components.  Smart cards are typically composed of PVC plastic, although they are occasionally made up of ABS as well.  They may also have holograms implanted so they cannot be counterfeited.

Without these cutting edge technologies, our government security would most likely be left in the last century.  These cards and tokens are a sign of the modern information protection capabilities of the developed world.
