Green tech i.e. solar and wind are useless to us. Wind isn’t worth a single penny of it’s cost and Solar is waaaay to expensive. The only good energy source is atomic, and not the way America pretends to do it, the way France does it i.e. the way that works and has a negligible amount of atomic waste.

the private sector does not select the best answer only the most profitable
the american manufacturers lag far far behind the japanese, we would never have reached the moon
we are on the downward slop of oil , private enterprise, except in japan hasn’t done any thing
it is time, and private enterprise has failed. gm bought subways systems and closed them down, to increase its profit, the cities it did it in now suffer, foe the short term profit of very very few
america needs a better system than pure capitalism, the current mixed system works far Better
adam smith is dead and as Keynes said
“The ideas of economists and political philosophers, both when they are right and when they are wrong, are more powerful than is commonly understood. Indeed the world is ruled by little else. Practical men, who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual influence, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist.”
John Maynard Keynes quote
Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone.”

i dunno where yerthak got their info from, but solar power, while expensive at the time, is getting much cheaper as technology advances, and harvests a ton of energy. people with solar panels on their homes can actually make money by selling the extra energy to the local power company. and wind power pays for itself if put in the right places. hell, pretty much every large ski resort in colorado is run entirely on wind power. as for the question, well, who knows. hes a politician, and you can say what you want, but every single politician (liberal, conservative, democratic, republican) is corrupted by the lust of money and bought out by oil companies, lobbyists, and large corporations.

No offense, but the private sector has served us pretty terribly lately. They haven’t been watching out for our safety, and they’ve been squeezing the consumer and even their own employees in the interest of turning a profit for the shareholders and executives. GM and Ford had to be bailed out by the government because they utterly failed to respond to changing market forces, and pretty much all of our banks had to be bailed out and/or were exposed as practicing highly questionable ethics. Now we’ve got BP as a shining example of a corporation sacrificing safety in order to turn a profit.
It’s true that as oil becomes scarcer and more expensive, green energy will become more profitable. However it’s also true that big businesses are often not good at responding to new market forces–they tend to carry a lot of inertia, and have both psychological and technological trouble adapting to new market forces, as we’ve seen with GM and Ford. There’s also the question of strategy–will oil companies switch to green tech, or will they decide to milk every cent from us until it is no longer feasible? The rising price of oil certainly hasn’t been treating consumers too well lately.
There are a lot of economic obstacles to green energy development that the government can help overcome. The single biggest factor inhibiting technological development is making the jump from research to application–we know how to do a ridiculous amount of stuff, but no one is willing to put in the money necessary to turn laboratory results into widespread commercial application. Green companies are also a fairly new thing. It’s not like they’re going to be equal players capable of outcompeting the oil industry on a level playing field.
So yes, taxpayers will be paying for green technology. But I suspect that with this, as with most things, everyone will complain about the cost but no one will complain about the results. We all want cheaper, cleaner energy that we don’t rely on other countries to produce. It’s just that nobody wants to personally foot the bill to get that done. We can wait around until we have no other choice, or we can start developing green tech now with taxpayer dollars to be prepared when the crisis hits. I see no reason to believe the free market will do the job effectively by itself.

My problem with what is called “free market” “or “private sector” stuff is that they assume a sort of natural selection thing is going to happen. It might happen in nature, but clearly it has not worked in the market. If good products are supposed to sell more because people will buy “smarter” stuff and not buy the useless stuff, why is that not happening? Why is there so much useless, polluting, poisonous crap out for sale? How come the good, smart, “green” products are not available? How come I never really heard of any gaining any amount of success? Why do people buy CRAP? The free market capitalist philosophy is turning out to be out of touch with the cycles and systems of nature. And when you do that, you invite suffering to yourself and the world. THAT is why I don’t have trust in the private sector. (Don’t get me wrong, Communism is equally out of touch with nature, Some people are better at some things than others, hierarchy is the only way for large groups of Homines Sapientes to live together.)
