Is Computer Engineering fit for me? Or Is Civil Engineering fit for me?
Hey, I have a couple questions on engineering. My grandpa is a civil engineer and has been the only one in the family so ever since I was a child, I would follow his footsteps. But since my first laptop in 2007, I’ve been fascinated with computers and electronics. I’ve given this a lot of thought and I was wondering if I should become a computer engineer or a civil engineer.
If I go into the computer engineering field I would want to design them rather than making programs and software with computer languages such as java, http, and C++ ( I haven’t tried it out yet but it looks very difficult). I know a bit more than the basics of a computer/laptop.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with custom 4GB Ram memory (DDR2) and 1.47 ghz processor. I was able to install the ram by myself. My laptop is also a 2007 model. I would love to help create new computers and electronics such as cell phones, hdds, and maybe even televisions. But I don’t want to have a low salary income.
By the time I finish college, I bet job hunting will even be more frustrating. If you’re wondering, I’m a sophmore at high school and I excell in most of my subjects except biology since I hate dissecting animals. (It’s against my religion)
I guess that should sum it up for my computer interest background.
For civil engineering, I’m pretty sure it’s about designing the inside structure of a building and has to do with A LOT OF GEOMETRY. Which I’m quite frankly good at! I wouldn’t mind using a protractor and ruler for my whole career, but I also don’t know much about civil engineering.
I forgot to mention, but I took Robotics freshman year and I aced it throughout the whole year and it was quite easy for me. ( Building with legos and computers, that isn’t hard one bit, I’m not being sarcastic ) I’m in New Jersey Technology Student Assossciation at the moment and I will be taking drafting/CAD next year for my elective and drafting/cad 2 for my senior year.
I know my information is quite a lot, but honestly this decision makes the rest of my life, so it will be the biggest decision I will ever make. Helping me out makes me speechless since this is so huge for me. And I thank you for taking your time reading this message and helping me out. You don’t know how much it means to me!!!

if you don’t want to program don’t go into computer engineering. it deals with both programming and hardware so you’ll be doing pretty much the same amount of both in your classes. you really don’t have a choice about what kind of classes you take when you’re going after a degree, they all have requirements.
as for civil engineering, there’s a lot more too it besides designing the inside of a building, you could be working on any number of things like that, but its more than just design aesthetically, you would be responsible for making sure the building keeps standing, not for how it looks. you could also be working on sewers, roads, bridges, etc.
if you’re really interested in computers and stuff like that i would still go into computer engineering, just get used to programming.
buttttttttttttttttt really id consider electrical engineering, a lot of the courses a computer engineer takes are similar or the same as those an electrical engineer takes, except electrical engineers don’t program much as far as i know.
whatever you do, good luck, engineering is a cool profession to get into.

Any engineering job nowadays requires a good skill in programming and without it you would be at a great disadvantage. You would need it extensively during your studies anyway.
As for the choice, feel yourself and follow your own trend and do not worry about future opportunities as yet.
